We all have had  mouth as dry as desert on some or the other occasion be it from excitement or shock but those are short lived. Dry mouth/ xerostomia is a serious medical condition.

It is can make everyday routine like eating, swallowing, talking difficult. It can lead to bad breath, gum and teeth problems also. It happen when saliva secretion drops. Usually dry mouth occurs as a part of aging process, side effect of medicine or treatments, symptoms of certain disease.

Usually treating the underlying cause of dry mouth is sufficient but if you don’t know what is causing it, making changes in your lifestyle can help you.

a. Drink water frequently even at night to keep mouth moist.

b. Ditch that sugary drink and caffeine to keep mouth hydrated.

c. Chewing sugar free gum, sucking on sugar free popsicle or candy helps in saliva secretion.

d. Avoid using any mouthwash which has alcohol in it.

e. Brush & floss your teeth twice a day to protect your teeth from dry mouth.

f. Use humidifier at night to help moisten inside of the mouth.

g. Avoid taking OTC antihistamine and decongestion medicine.

h. Quit using any tobacco based product.

i. You can also try OTC Saliva stimulating products.
